Artificial Intelligence–Driven Librarianship for Educational Transformation in Kenya

Abstract

The accelerating evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is redefining the functional and epistemic foundations of librarianship, positioning libraries as intelligent knowledge systems within digitally enabled educational ecosystems. This paper critically examines the potential of AI-driven librarianship to catalyze educational transformation in Kenya. It synthesizes key AI technologies including machine learning, natural language processing, and semantic web applications and evaluates their applicability in enhancing information discovery, automated knowledge organization, and context-aware retrieval. The paper advances a conceptual perspective on AI-enabled, user-centered library services, highlighting how predictive analytics, recommender systems, and adaptive interfaces can support personalized learning and improve user engagement. It conceptualizes the role of librarians as knowledge engineers and data stewards, requiring advanced competencies in AI literacy, digital curation, and data governance within evolving educational environments. Furthermore, the study interrogates critical ethical, legal, and governance issues associated with AI integration, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, intellectual property, and equitable access. It also examines the challenges confronting AI adoption in Kenyan academic libraries, notably infrastructural limitations, skills deficits, and financial constraints, while identifying opportunities for innovation, enhanced research support, and institutional competitiveness. Finally, the paper proposes strategic directions for sustainable AI integration, emphasizing policy development, capacity building, and collaborative frameworks. It concludes that AI-driven librarianship offers a transformative pathway for education in Kenya, contingent upon inclusive, ethical, and context responsive implementation.
