Abstract

Unlike other forms of violence, sexual and gender based violence is always handled in secrecy possibly because of its location in inequitable gender and sexual associations based on power and its effects on its survivors. The purpose of this study was to establish the effects of gender based violence on academic performance among Daystar University students. It objectives were to; establish the forms of gender based violence experienced by students of Daystar University, determine the causes of gender based violence among students of Daystar University, examine the effects of gender based violence on students’ academic performance, and suggest strategies that could be adapted to mitigate gender based violence among Daystar University students. The social control theory guided the study. The target population for this study was 2874 students enrolled in the institution as at 2016. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 96 students. The study adopted a descriptive research design and data collection was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire and interview guide. Quantitative data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20, while the qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis where the information obtained were reported in a narrative form. Findings indicated that gender based violence incidences were minimal and this was attributed to the fact that majority of the victims did not report to the relevant authorities. The main causes of gender based violence at the institution were peer pressure, lack of moral respect and responsibility, lack of self-awareness, and emotional imbalance. The study concluded that gender based violence affected performance of students due to low self-esteem as a result of assault. It recommended that forms of gender based violence be identified within the university and addressed by minimizing or preventing their occurrence.
