Abstract
The purpose of the research was to assess the strategies adopted by flying schools to improve performance in the Kenyan Aviation Industry based on the case of the Kenya School of Flying. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population comprised 90 employees at Kenya School of Flying plus 215 pilot students. The sample size was 47 respondents. Stratified sampling technique was used. The main data collection tool used was a structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques including mean and percentage frequencies by the aid of SPSS. The findings showed that majority of the respondents agreed that the school had its course content (66.7%), trained students on how to penetrate new markets in the industry (52.7%), had up to-date technology for training pilots (77.8%), employed enough teachers for effective training (61.2%), offered refresher courses (57.1%) and maintained close relationships with students (72.3%). The findings also indicated that these strategies contributed to the business performance of the Flying School which was rated as very good (64%) in terms of revenue and profits. The study established that the strategies adopted by Kenya School of Flying to improve performance manifested in the form of product and service quality as well as customer relations management. These strategies positively impacted on the performance of the Flying School. The major challenges to strategy implementation concerned lack of engagement of the right people and lack of adequate resources. The study recommended that the Flying School should develop strategic human resource policies and human resource development programs that attract and retain core talent. Further research at the Flying School should explore how strategic human resource can be embedded in the business strategy to enhance business performance.
