Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of diversity on employee motivation in Barclays Bank of Kenya (BBK). Specifically, the study sought to identify various forms of diversity at Barclays Bank of Kenya, identify indicators of motivation at BBK and assess the effects of diversity on employee motivation at
BBK. The study adopted a case study design. The target population comprised of 2771 full time employees of BBK Nairobi County. The sample size was 277 employees. The study used self-administered questionnaires for data collection. A pre-test study was tested on 27 respondents to check the validity and reliability of the questionnaires. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics which included frequencies and percentages. The study found that different forms of diversity existed at BBK, which included educational, age, gender, cultural and physical disability forms of diversity. The study also found out that diversity had an effect on the motivation of the employees of the bank and that some of the effects of diversity were that the staff felt satisfied as employees and that BBK had been able to achieve its goals due to effective management of diversity. The study concluded that majority of the staff employed at Barclays bank belonged to various age groups and were of diverse ages. Further, it was concluded that there existed an organization structure that advocated for culture diversity in the bank and that the bank supported employees from minority groups. The study recommended that organisations should not only focus on rewards and incentives when motivating their employees but rather adopt diversity as the alternative way of motivating employees. This study also recommended that organisations should try and diversify their workplace in terms of balancing gender and workforce. This will increase the versatility of employees hence making work less difficulty and more interesting.
