Abstract

ABSTRACT The reintegration process for returnees and their families from the Diaspora is challenging and multifaceted. This mixed-methods study aimed to explore the psychosocial challenges and coping strategies of Kenyan returnees and their families during the reintegration process after having lived in the diaspora for two years or more. Specifically, the study sought to assess the psychosocial challenges faced by Kenyan returnees, establish their coping strategies, and examine the association between the challenges and coping strategies for the individuals and families residing in Nairobi County who are currently working in the State Department for Foreign Affairs as well as those that are affiliated to other Diaspora entities. The study was guided by the Social Network Theory and Acculturation Theory. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The sample population used for the study was 300 for the quantitative phase. Social Demographic Questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data and in-depth interviews for the qualitative. The data was then sampled using exponential non-discriminative sampling. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS version 23, MANOVA (Multivariate Analysis of Variance) and Spearman’s Rank Correlation (Rs) and NVIVO version 12 for Qualitative. The analysis revealed that acceptance in the society, lifestyle changes and re-adjusting to new social networks were the most difficult aspect after returning back home and the returnees used, seeking support from family and friends, upholding religious beliefs and optimism as coping strategies. There was a strong correlation between the psychosocial challenges and coping strategies of returnees.
