Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate mitigation and adaptation strategies employed by farmers in Kenya to combat climate change. This study investigated the challenges faced by farmers in Kenya in the context of climate change and explored the evidence of strategies employed in adopting and mitigating these phenomena. Descriptive research design was used and the target population was 238 employees who worked directly in MCF farms. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 98 respondents. Data was gathered using interviews and questionnaires. The study concluded that various strategic responses were employed by the MCF farms to mitigate climate change and sustain farm performance. These strategies encompassed agriculture, forestry and land use, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and renewable energy. The study findings indicated that MCF farms faced various challenges due to climate change. The findings also indicated that some of the adaption strategies employed in MCF farms were water harvesting, irrigation, planting drought tolerant crops and provision of health care for employees among others. In addition, mitigation and adaptation strategies were statistically significant in explaining farm performance at MCF farms. The study recommended that Managers at MCF farms should use the findings of this study to craft strategies regarding improvement areas and areas to excel. The government should start training programmes to educate all citizens on climate change and the various strategies that can be employed to mitigate and adapt the phenomenon of climate change.
