dc.description.abstractBurnout is a chronic stress syndrome which develops gradually as a consequence of exposure to prolonged stressful environment(s). Further, burnout reduces the motivation and effectiveness of many human service providers. Understanding the causes of burnout among the nurses can allow an organization‟s management to develop appropriate strategies to prevent or alleviate the problems. The study investigated the relative differences in the levels of burnout among nurses based on various socio-demographic factors in the population. The study also determined the prevalence of burnout among nurses at St. Mary‟s Mission hospital, Nairobi. This study adopted Selye‟s theory of general adaptation syndrome. A cross sectional census sampling was used that recruited a total population of all the 70 nurses in all the 13 departments at St. Mary‟s mission hospital. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was used to assess nurses‟ burnout, which evaluates feelings of inadequate personal achievement, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. This instrument was designed to assess the three aspects of burnout syndrome. A socio demographic questionnaire (SDQ) which the researcher developed was used to also obtain important information. The findings revealed that 36% were highly depersonalized, 55% scored low on personal accomplishment and 35% were highly emotionally exhausted. The results of this study gave recommendations for initiating management programs that can recognize the importance of training nurses to cope with demands in their profession since burnout can evolve in all kinds of vocational groups. The study also recommended counseling services to be made available to nurses in order to help them cope with the demands of their work.
