Abstract
The elderly persons in developing countries including Kenya are faced with many social and economic challenges which negatively impact on their welfare. The four objectives of the study were to Examine the effectiveness of the cash transfer programme on the socio-economic well-being of the older persons in Nakuru East Sub-county, Assess the effectiveness of the existing institutional structures in facilitating cash transfer to the elderly in Nakuru East Sub-County, to determine the challenges faced by the beneficiaries of, and caregivers in, the elderly cash transfer programme, and to address the critical gaps in knowledge by conducting a rigorous examination of the effectiveness of the cash transfer program in Nakuru East Sub-County. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and assess the effectiveness of the government cash transfer program in improving the well-being of the elderly in Kenya using Nakuru East Sub-County as a case study area.The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional research design based on a sample of 156 randomly selected elderly persons who at the time of the study were recipients of the cash transfer in Free-Area and Bondeni locations of Nakuru East Sub-County. Thirty-three (33) caregivers and one key informant were purposively selected to provide insights on the research problem. Both primary and secondary data was sourced to help obtain sufficient information appropriate to addressing the study objectives. A combination of structured and open-ended questionnaires and key informant interview guides were used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Descriptive statistics were used to provide in-depth understanding of the impact of social protection to the elderly in the study area. The study recommends increased, timely and regular payment of the allowances, embracing and recognizing the contributions made by Caregivers by programme implanting agencies.
