Abstract
This study investigated the influence of strategic management practices on the competitiveness of private universities in Kenya. The purpose of the study was to examine how strategic direction, forecasting and planning, competitiveness of private universities influence the competitiveness of private universities. This study is founded on: Resource-Based View (RBV), Industry Life Cycle Theory, and Institutional Theory. The study adopted a descriptive research design, using structured questionnaires as the primary data collection instrument. The population of the study 74 universities in Kenya and the target population comprised of the 39 chartered private universities in Kenya, with a target sample size of 287 respondents, including deans, heads of departments, and directors. To ensure the validity of the research instruments, advise from supervisors and experts was sought. Reliability was tested Cronbach alpha that was calculated using split half method, achieving an acceptable threshold of 0.7 The mean Cronbach's alpha scores for all variables ranged from 0.776, indicating good internal consistency. Data was analyzed using both descriptive statistics (frequencies, means, and standard deviations) and inferential statistics, including regression analysis to test the hypotheses. The study revealed that strategic direction significantly influences the competitiveness of private universities in Kenya, with an R² value of 0.137. Strategic forecasting and planning explained 12.3% of the changes in competitiveness, as indicated by an R² value of 0.123. Human capital development accounted for 36.7% of the variability in competitiveness, with an R² value of 0.367. Conversely, strategic control explained only 1% of the changes in competitiveness, reflected in an R² value of 0.010. The findings highlighted that strategic direction, forecasting and planning, and human capital development positively influence the competitiveness of private universities, while strategic control showed a weaker but still significant effect. Government regulations played a moderating role in the relationship between strategic management practices and competitiveness. The study concluded that strategic direction has a significant statistical influence on the competitiveness of private universities in Kenya. strategic planning has a significant statistical influence on the competitiveness of private universities in Kenya. strategic control has a significant statistical influence on the competitiveness of private universities in Kenya. Government regulations had significantly statistically moderated the relationship between strategic management practices and competitiveness of selected private. Strategic management practices enhanced competitiveness of private universities. The study recommends that private Universities in Kenya should improve on the strategic directions. It is necessary to adopt and employ a systematic approach to develop strategies for achieving its goals. The management of private universities should seek to enhance their operating efficiency and quality of services in order to improve their strategic planning amid the many government regulations in the sector in which they operate. Future studies may consider examining strategic management practices on competitiveness of companies in different sectors. Further studies may be undertaken to determine the effect of strategic management practices on improving academic performance and future researchers should examine the kind of strategies management practices and influence on competency.
