An Investigation of Strategic Leadership and Its Influence on Financial Performance: A Case of Co-Operative Bank of Kenya

Abstract

Financial performance is a relevant concern to banks’ future and current success. The objectives of the study were to ascertain the different components of strategic leadership employed by the Co-operative Bank, to determine if strategic leadership has a significant influence on financial performance at the Co-operative Bank of Kenya and to determine the challenges that affect strategic leadership faced by the Co-operative Bank of Kenya. The study used primary data collected by the use of questionnaires. Purposive sampling technique was used to derive the required information from the Co-operative Bank of Kenya. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study used cross tabulation to establish the effect of strategic leadership on financial performance. The study findings indicated the general information, components of strategic leadership, influence of strategic leadership, and the challenges affecting Co-operative Bank of Kenya. The research recommended that financial institutions should invest on strategic leadership so as to enhance their financial performances. There is also need to replicate the study among other organizations so as to make the findings more representative and objective. The conclusions for this study were that components of strategic leadership existed at the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, there was a relationship between strategic leadership and financial performance and that government regulations, industrial requirements, training and development and competition were challenges that affected the bank. Recommendations of the study included environmental analysis, training and development, improvement of structures, involvement of staff and inclusion of strategic leadership policies in operations and transactions of the bank.
