Abstract
Work-induced stress is a recognized and substantial global occupational hazard, posing potential detrimental effects on both physical and mental health. Despite the implementation of policies in Nairobi City County aimed at enhancing employee productivity and well-being, challenges with psychological well-being persist. This study targeted the parking lot workers in the city with the goal of assessing the prevalence of depression and its contributing factors. The research involved 316 parking lot employees and was based on Selye's Theory of Stress and the Framework of Occupational Stress Model. We included a total of 169 respondents through stratified sampling. SPSS was used for statistical analysis, and the outcomes were displayed visually. According to the study, over 60% of participants struggled with varying degrees of depression, while a sizeable portion (33.2%) only experienced mild depression. Emotional distress, sleep problems, low energy, problems with self-esteem, attention problems, and noticeable behavioral changes are all factors that contribute to depression. Additionally, depression had a significant impact on how well parking lot workers performed at work. The study showed that 53.3% of the variations in work performance could be attributed to depression. Additionally, depression significantly and negatively impacted work performance. In conclusion, this study highlights the urgent need for specific mental health interventions designed for Nairobi City County parking lot employees. It fervently urges businesses to fund comprehensive employee mental health support systems, especially for those in the parking lot industry. Such a proactive strategy could improve the performance and well-being of this workforce.
