Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parenting styles and juvenile delinquency in juvenile rehabilitation schools in Kenya. Social learning theory, social control theory and Baumrind’s parenting typology were used as theoretical guides in establishing the relationship between parenting styles and delinquent behavior outcome. Parenting styles were grouped into four types, namely authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and uninvolved parenting styles. This study used respondents’ information concerning parenting style in relation to delinquent behavior outcome in three juvenile rehabilitation schools, namely Kirigiti, Kakamega and Kericho rehabilitation schools. The study was descriptive in nature and adopted a cross sectional research design. The sampling method used was stratified simple random technique to divide the schools into boys and girls, simple random technique to select three schools and a census of the students in the selected schools took part in the data collection. Out of a sample size of 175, from three sampled schools determined from a population of 10 juvenile rehabilitation schools, 149 respondents took part in the study. A parental authority questionnaire, socio-demographics questionnaire and a self-reported delinquency survey were used in data gathering. The data was analyzed quantitatively using SPSS software version 18. The findings show that the most delinquent acts committed by juvenile delinquents in rehabilitation schools were stealing, school refusal and running away from home. The predominant parenting style that the respondents agreed to was uninvolved style of parenting which was significantly linked to development of delinquent behavior among the respondents. The study’s findings show a relationship between uninvolved parenting style and delinquent behavior outcome
