Abstract
This study aimed at examining the relationship between resilience and academic achievement of adolescent orphans in Matungulu Sub-County. Its objectives were to: investigate the challenges faced; analyse the resilience factors and examine the relationship between resilience and academic achievement of the studied population. Variable focused models of resilience and socioecological theory of resilience provided the theoretical basis for this study because of their complementary nature in description of resilience. The study used the descriptive survey design. The study population were 12-15-year-old adolescent orphans attending public primary schools in Matungulu subcounty, Machakos County, Kenya. The sample consisted of eighty12-15-year-old adolescent orphans attending class seven and eight in selected public primary schools determined through multistage sampling technique. Mixed methods were used in collecting data. Quantitative data was collected using an 8-item closed ended challenges questionnaire and a 28-item three-point Likert scale of CYRM. Qualitative data was collected using KII schedule and adolescent orphans FGD guide. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS version 22. Qualitative data was transcribed and presented as verbatim. The study revealed that majority 57 (81.4%) of the adolescent orphans of the orphans had high score on resilience. However, there was an insignificant positive relationship between resilience and academic achievement (r=0.173, p=0.152>0.05). Further, child’s personal skills had a significant positive relationship with academic achievement (β1=1.183, P=0.044<0.05). The study recommends collaboration between different stakeholders to bridge the child protection gaps and promote the development of personal skills which were found to be positively related with academic achievement.
