Abstract
Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) practices are very crucial in both private and public organizations. Organizational performance is getting more and more important, especially in a market with greater competition and dynamic. In a rapidly changing competitive environment, human resources are one important source of competitive advantage. Strategic human resource management practices concern with the creation of a linkage between the overall strategic aims of business and the strategic human resource management practices and implementation. This study sought to analyse the effects of strategic human resource management practices on performance of Kenya’s County governments. The specific objectives of the study were to; determine the Strategic Human Resource Management practices in use at the County Government of Makueni, evaluate the performance indicators of County Government of Makueni, and establish the effects of Strategic Human Resources Management practices on performance of County Government of Makueni. The study was anchored on Resource based view theory, Equity theory, Cognitive Learning theory and Campbell theory. The study targeted 1,247 employees of Makueni County from which a sample size of 91 was taken. The sampling frame of the study was top management and middle management employers who are in the 10 ministries. Primary data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires. Data was analysed using the Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22. Frequency distribution tables, bar charts and pie charts used to present the results for easier understanding and interpretation using descriptive statistics. The study concluded that the most significant strategy that affect the performance of the county government of Makueni was talent management, employee resourcing is the second one followed by rewarding and lastly retention.
