Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the girl child empowerment on the boy child well-being in Kenya using selected primary schools in Mukurwe-ini Sub-County, Nyeri County as case study area. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The target population comprised pupils, head teachers, teachers, and parents, out of school children, (who were identified through snowball method of sampling), government officers, and education sponsors in the Sub-County. The study focused on the head teachers, class teachers, pupils, parents and education officials of Mukurwe-ini Sub-County. A total of 1130 respondents formed the possible respondents of this study. According to Mugenda between 10%30% of the total population can selected to be representative of the targeted population. For the purposes of this study, 10% (113) of the total targeted population (1130) was used for data collection. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews and document analysis (school records like registers). The collected data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Version 21). The study concluded that the empowerment of the girl child programs in Mukurwe-ini Sub-County help the girls to improve their education and stay in schools. It also helps them overcome the traditional barrier to girl child education. The study also concluded that various socio economic factors such as peer pressure, lack of school fees, laxity by parents of the boys, stigmatization of the community and to some extent, punishment meted out by the teachers contribute to the school drop out of the boy child. The study recommends that the school administration, parents, NGOs and community based organizations should devise ways of equally empowering both boys and girl child education for equal chances in securing employment and participation in the community.
