Abstract

The study aimed to assess the prevalence of depression disorder among Pentecostal clergy in Lang’ata Sub County, Nairobi, Kenya. It had several objectives, including evaluating the prevalence of depression, investigating the relationship between sociodemographic factors and depression, identifying the triggers of depression, and analysing coping mechanisms within this clergy group. Employing a descriptive research design, the study encompassed a sample size of 100 pastors from Pentecostal churches in Lang’ata Sub County, making it a census study. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS (version 28). The findings indicated that sociodemographic factors, particularly salary challenges and a lack of organizational structures and policies, significantly impacted the mental well-being of the clergy. A notable proportion of pastors expressed a lack of effectiveness in their work and a deficit of social and financial support. Interestingly, younger pastors exhibited milder to moderate depressive symptoms compared to their older counterparts. A majority (60%) of the respondents were below 45 years of age, with 45% of them presenting with mild or moderate depressive symptoms. The study concluded that pastors, like professionals in any other field, face a range of challenges, including psychological and social ones. Therefore, they should be considered for psychosocial support to enhance their effectiveness. Additionally, it was recommended that the training of pastors should encompass psychosocial aspects, enabling them to address a wider array of issues effectively. Moreover, establishing comprehensive policies concerning psychosocial aspects of life, salaries, and administration within churches was advised to improve working conditions for the clergy. This research underscores the importance of addressing the mental health and overall well-being of clergy members.
