Abstract

The type of reward systems used by organizations is an important factor in employee motivation where firms that fully understand and address the needs of their employees will be able to attract and retain as well as motivate the staff. The purpose of this study was to establish the effects of reward system as a strategy on employee motivation in the oil industry: A case of Riva Petroleum Dealers Limited Kenya. It identified reward systems used at Riva, established the effects of reward system on employee motivation at Riva and established the measures of employee motivation at Riva. It employed a descriptive research design whose purpose was the description of state of affairs as they were. The population was 130 employees at Riva Petroleum Dealers Limited at the time of the study. The study employed census method of sampling. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS Version 23.0. Data was collected using questionnaires and presented in the form of tables and charts. The study found that Riva uses both financial and non-financial rewards to motivate employees, the reward and recognition scheme is based on employee performance and rewards that are tied to individual performance results in higher productivity. The study concludes that the use of total rewards system may increase the motivation levels of the employees at Riva Petroleum Dealers Limited. The study recommends that the reward systems should be clear such that they create a direct link between their performance and work and the reward they receive and the organization need to adopt the use of contingent rewards, recognition from management, fringe benefits and bonuses.
