Social enterprises play a crucial role of providing social services such as health care, education and other basic needs to the disadvantaged members of the community. Growth of these social enterprises however is constrained hence the impact on both the business sector and community is also limited. The purpose of the study was to investigate the challenges affecting the growth of social enterprises in Kenya focusing on the county of Nairobi. Specific objectives of the study included; Identifying the growth indicators of social enterprises; identifying the effect of balancing between social and commercial objectives on the growth of social enterprises; Finding out the challenges faced in measuring achievement of social objectives and also identifying other challenges which affects the growth of social enterprises in the county of Nairobi. The study used survey research design while the target population was sixty-four (64) respondents drawn from 32 social enterprises from the county of Nairobi. The study used census sampling technique which involved taking the entire population of thirty-two (32) social enterprises as a sample with sixty-four (64) respondents. The study established that balancing between social and commercial objectives had an effect on the growth of social enterprises and that the challenge of measuring social performance also affected their growth. It also established that unrealistic financial expectations were also a challenge to social enterprises. The study recommends that social enterprises need to develop and implement business growth strategies in line with their double bottom line in order to be able to effectively cope with business changes as they are easily affected by the smallest changes in the market.en_US
