Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the relationship between internet addiction and risky sexual behavior in adolescents within selected public secondary schools in Kibra sub-county, Nairobi, Kenya. The research had several specific objectives, including determining the prevalence of internet addiction among these adolescents, analyzing their sexual behaviors, exploring the connection between internet addiction and risky sexual behavior, and identifying coping strategies used by the adolescents to address internet addiction and risky sexual behavior. Data collection involved a questionnaire comprising sections on socio-demographic information, the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS), coping mechanisms, and risky sexual behaviors. Information was gathered from three selected schools, denoted as A, B, and C. The data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics, such as mean and standard deviation, were used to describe the demographic details of the respondents. Inferential statistics were employed to evaluate the significance of relationships between various study variables. The study found a significant relationship between smartphone ownership and internet addiction, as indicated by the Chi-Square Test (p=0.000). There was also a weak, yet statistically significant, correlation between internet addiction and risky sexual behavior (r=0.160, p=0.018) among the adolescents. In addressing internet addiction, respondents reported adopting coping strategies, such as engaging in offline activities, setting limits on internet use, disabling phone notifications, distancing themselves from their phones, and parental control measures. These strategies have proven effective in reducing internet use and access.
