T This study sought to investigate the prevalence of gambling among adolescents in Kiboro primary school in Mathare informal settlement, Nairobi County. The population size was 871 pupils from Kiboro primary School. The study adopted a descriptive research design and used purposive sampling to select the target population who were further stratified according to gender. Simple random sampling was used to select a representative sample of 201 respondents. The data was collected using questionnaires and the Southern Oaks Gambling Screen assessment tool (SOGS-RA) and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), finally results were presented using descriptive statistics. The key findings of the study. The research established that gambling prevalence was 73% with the key motivating factors being desired to make money, availability of gambling sites, socialization, and the need to remove boredom. Additionally, being male was significantly related to removing boredom, relieving stress, socialization, and ease of availability and accessibility of gambling sites. The leading types of gambling were playing cards for money, followed by pool table betting, playing lotteries on radio and betting on sports events. While age and gender had a significant statistical relationship with the gambling severity. Based on the findings the study recommends stake holders like parents and teachers follow up and participate in the implementation of gambling policy among the underage. This will restrict adolescents’ access to gambling sites. The study recommends that school-based psychoeducation and harm reduction prevention programs be instituted in schools in informal settlement areas.
