Good leadership at the top is perceived as a major challenge to effective strategy implementation. Global success rate on effective strategy implementation is between 10%-30% and this low rate is associated with poor leadership. This study sought to investigate the role played by strategic leadership in effective strategy implementation of Redeemed Gospel Church Development Program 2007-2012 strategic plans. Five objectives of the study included to: - determine the role played by strategic leadership at RGCDP, determine organizational factors that affected RGCDP, establish how key stakeholders involvement affected 2007-2012 strategy implementation at RGCDP, determine challenges faced by RGCDP in implementation 2007-2012 strategic plan and determine the impact of a successfully implemented 2007-2012 strategy by RGCDP. Although RGCDP has a population of 2608 staff countrywide; the study targeted 102 staff stationed in Huruma, Mathare and Korogocho slums in Nairobi. A sample size of 40 out of 102 was considered. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. The data was largely analysed quantitatively using SPSS version 18.0. Qualitative method was used in analysing qualitative data. The study found that strategic leadership plays a critical role in effective strategic implementation. The study clearly revealed that without good leadership from the CEO, the strategic plan could not have succeeded. The study revealed that involvement of key stakeholders is essential for successful strategy implementation. Continuous monitoring and evaluation emerged as one of the top aspect that ensured the successful strategy implementation. Consequently, continuous monitoring and evaluation of the strategic plan is recommended. The study recommends full commitment of top management in the engagement and development of core competencies, alongside effective management of firm’s portfolio for successful implementation of the strategic plan.
