This study aimed to explore the effect of betrayal trauma among adolescent survivors of sexual abuse in selected Nairobi children’s rescues centres. The objectives of the study were to assess the prevalence of betrayal trauma among adolescent survivors of sexual abuse, establish the effects of betrayal trauma among adolescent survivors of sexual abuse and explore the coping strategies utilized by adolescent survivors of sexual abuse in response to betrayal trauma in selected children’s rescue centers in Nairobi County, Kenya. A cross-sectional research design was utilized integrating quantitative data collection and analysis technique to provide a comprehensive understanding of the research problem. The target population was 120 adolescent survivors of sexual abuse residing in selected children’s rescue centers in Nairobi. Purposive sampling was used to select the respondents for the study population. In sample size determination, a census approach was used where all the 120 adolescent survivors residing in select rescue centers were used as the sample size. In data collection, structured questionnaire, betrayal trauma inventory and Beck Depression Inventory were used. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in data analysis. The study found that a majority of respondents reported high levels of betrayal trauma and the associated emotional, psychological, and social difficulties. There was also a significant degree of dissociation, memory suppression, and PTSD-related symptoms reported. A significant link exists between betrayal trauma and depression: According to Pearson correlation analysis, there is a robust positive correlation (r = 0.76, p < 0.01) between these two variables, indicating that higher levels of betrayal trauma are associated with increased depressive symptoms. Regarding the effects of betrayal trauma, the study established that participants often expressed feelings of sadness (39.1% constantly), tears (43.5% regularly), and isolation (39.1% constantly). These emotional symptoms are a manifestation of the profound psychological effects of trauma. Cognitive symptoms like lack of confidence (39.1% uncertain about themselves) and feelings of guilt (43.5% don't feel guilty) were also common. Common behavioral problems included trouble sleeping (43.5%), decreased appetite (34.8%), and feeling tired at times (39.1%). The study concluded that trauma is connected to ongoing emotional and psychological difficulties, such as guilt, trust issues, and low self-esteem. Teens who go through betrayal trauma are at a higher risk of developing lasting mental health problems, such as depression. From a trauma perspective, the psychological pain that accompanies betrayal experiences remains unresolved, therefore continues to cause further psychological distress and hinders positive development of the adolescents in question in the long run. The study recommends that rescue centers should focus on offering extensive mental health services that are easily available to all teenagers. This involves making sure that every resident has consistent opportunities for professional counseling and therapy sessions. It is important to create organized programs that improve coping skills and resilience at rescue centers. These programs may consist of peer support groups, creative arts therapies, and resilience training designed to empower teenagers to handle trauma.
