The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between depression and academic performance among adolescents in Rithimitu Mixed Secondary School in Dagoretti North Sub-County, Nairobi County, Kenya. The study’s objectives were to determine the prevalence of depression among adolescents, establish the academic performance of adolescents, examine the risk factor of depression among adolescents and to assess the impact of depression on academic performance among adolescents. A descriptive correlational design was employed in which 226 adolescents in forms 1,2 and 3, aged 15 to 18 years randomly selected were used. A researcher’s developed questionnaire, Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDII-II) and Kenya's academic grading system were used to collect data. SPSS version 28.0 was used to generate and analyze data collected using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation was used to evaluate the strength of the relationship between the variables of the research. Analysis of variance was conducted at average (44%), poor (29.6%), and good academic performance (26.4%). Depression was found to be prevalent overall at (37.7%) according to the statistics. In comparison to females (30.2%), depression was substantially higher in males (69.8%) and among form two students (39%). The study showed a positive correlation at 2 tailed between academic performance and depression of 0.502 (p value = 0.00) indicating an increase in depression as associated with a decrease in academic performance. The findings on regression analysis revealed that depression was statistically significant in predicting the level of academic performance. The study recommends early detection and treatment of depression by professional psychologists to improve adolescents’ psychological wellbeing and academic performance.
