Abstract
Organizations that successfully implement their strategies gain a competitive advantage in the market and achieve high performance results. It has become apparent that a firm can have the most brilliant strategy but if not properly implemented it will add no value to the organization. This study sought to determine the role of leadership in strategy implementation in Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), to identify the key roles of leadership at the Bank and to determine the role of leadership in strategy implementation at KCB. The study adopted a descriptive research design and the target population of the study was the employees of the bank located at the Head Office in Upper Hill, Nairobi. Nairobi was chosen due to its close proximity to the researcher and easy access to potential respondents. From a target population of 95 employees, a sample size of 78 was considered. Consensus sampling was used in selection of respondents and primary data was collected through questionnaires which constituted open ended and closed ended questions. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software and data analysis was done through correlation analysis and presented using graphs, tables and figures. The findings of the study were that the nature of leadership at KCB was one that strongly encouraged open communication between leadership and employees of the bank; key roles of leadership at KCB bank included defining the strategic intent of the organization, establishing balanced organization controls, resource management, supporting organization culture and emphasizing ethical practices within the organization. The study recommended that increased awareness must be created at the leadership level on the importance of the leadership role towards strategy implementation.
