According to the World Health Organization report of 1991, alcohol abuse has a devastating effect on Third World countries. Alcohol also is abused to the extent that the consumers and their families suffer a great deal from its adverse effects. Under its influence the abusers tend to engage in hazardous behaviors, notably unsafe sex, dangerous driving, and fights, which they would otherwise not participate in. The denial of the problem of alcoholism and social stigma prevent people involved from seeking help and treatment (WHO, 1991). The purpose of this research was to explore the impact of alcohol abuse on the family in Kangemi informal settlement, Nairobi. This research used a descriptive design as it sought to describe the personal, social and economic characteristics of the respondents. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected using interviews and questionnaires. The quantitative data examined the statistical records to establish the number of individuals involved in alcoholism, their ages, level of education among other variables. The qualitative survey derived data through questionnaires and in-depth interview schedules. Data collected included the perceptions and attitudes of family members on alcoholism. The data shows that the majority of those who abuse alcohol in Kangemi started drinking alcohol at an early age; and a greater number of them were influenced into this behavior by their peers. Others were influenced by relatives who were involved in the habit. The results show that alcohol abuse has contributed heavily to the unemployment and subsequently the high level of poverty in Kangemi. Alcohol abuse is also responsible for social ills such as the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV/AIDS. The study also found out that a great number of broken marriages, widowhood, and criminal activities in the area are caused by alcohol abuse. The study also reports physical illnesses and how the combination of these affects the health status and lifestyle of family members in Kangemi. The study recommends the establishment of a psycho-education program to create awareness of the impact of alcohol on the family.
