The study sought to investigate the effects of leadership styles on the performance of microfinance institutions in Nairobi County. The objectives of the study were to identify the leadership styles adopted by managers within microfinance institutions, to examine the effects of leadership styles on the performance of microfinance institutions and to identify the relationship between leadership styles and performance of microfinance institutions. The research used the descriptive research methodology. This attempted to collect data from members of the population in order to determine the current status of the population with respect to the given variables. The study targeted 230 employees of seven Microfinance Institutions in Nairobi County who were categorized into top-level managers, mid-level managers and staff. Simple random sampling was used to select 69 employees out of the target population who were given questionnaires with structured and unstructured questions. Data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20). Data was presented using tables and charts. The researcher found out that leadership style was a major factor affecting organizational performance. The respondents indicated that in order for an organization to realize its objectives, there was need for the leaders to understand the employees' perceptions of their leadership styles. Factors such as productivity, and employee turnover and job satisfaction were seen to affect the way they perceive their leader. It was recommended that leaders can therefore not treat all the employees the same way hence not all styles can fit all levels of employees.
