Abstract

The overall purpose of this study was to determine relationship between occupational stress and job satisfaction amongst African Inland Church Pastors in Nzaui region, Makeuni county in Kenya. The study objectives were to; determine the prevalence of occupational stress among A.I.C. pastors in Nzaui region, examine the impact of occupational stress on job satisfaction of A.I.C pastors, determine how AIC pastors in Nzaui Region cope with occupational stress while executing their duties, and establish the relationship between occupational stress and job satisfaction among AIC Pastors in Nzaui Region. The study applied two theories: The Job Demands- Resources (JD-R) theory and the Welford Performance and Demand Theory (WPDT). The research used a descriptive design and a sample size of 65. Data was mainly collected using questionnaires. The researcher also used other tools like Minnesota and Work Stress questionnaires. Data was analyzed using SPSS (version 26). The study found that most participants (65.5%) had adequate experience working as pastors in AIC Church. The study involved 58 pastors, serving a range of churches, with 22.4% working in three, 15.5% in five, 10.3% in two, and 8.6% in one or ten churches. Most members of congregation (53.8%) comprised a population size of 101-200 people, with a membership count below 200. A key research finding was that study should be conducted to determine the optimal workload for pastors, as 48.2% of respondents identified it as a significant source of stress. Many participants (69%) exhibit hesitancy in sharing their work-related experiences when discussing their stress levels. Worldwide, clergy members experience significant job stress.
