dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the constraints and opportunities affecting food security in Kenya. The study was carried out in Mathare informal settlement schemes (slum area). The study adopted descriptive research design by targeting the residents of Kiamutisya, Bondeni and Kosovo area of Mathare slums. The sampling techniques employed were stratified, systematic and simple random in selecting a study sample of 97 households. The data was collected by the use of questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS and presented inform of tables, graphs and charts. Most of the resident in the informal settlement earn between 101 to 200 shillings per day with most of the respondents engaging in informal business. Food demand is quite responsive to the changes in income, own prices, and household demographics such as age and sex. The study recommends that the government should create income generating activities that will give all citizens an equal opportunity to have their income that can cater for food. The study recommended that those who cook food alongside the road should be provided with medical certificates to ensure the food they provide to the residents are healthier to them.
