dc.description.abstractBurnout syndrome can be described as a syndrome that is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment that is caused by constant exposure to extreme demands placed on an individual’s mental wellbeing during ones work especially in tasks that deal with constant contact with other people. The purpose of this study was to assess burnout syndrome among nursing students at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nairobi campus in Nairobi County, Kenya. Its objectives were to; establish the prevalence of burnout syndrome among nursing students, analyse the social demographic characteristics and burnout syndrome, investigate the risk factors of burnout syndrome and examine the strategies put in place to reduce burnout syndrome. Stratified random sampling was used on the sample population of 132 nursing students. The study employed a descriptive survey design and targeted second- and third-year nursing students at KMTC Nairobi Campus, Kenya. A self-administered questionnaire and interview schedule was used in data collection. The prevalence of burnout syndrome was measured using a modified adaptation of Maslach Burnout Inventory Student Survey (MBI-SS). Data was analyzed using SPSS and results were presented in form of tables and figures. A high prevalence of burnout syndrome was established, where 106(80.3%) respondents indicated they felt mentally and emotionally drained with their classroom and clinical practice work. Correlation analysis results indicated weak positive correlations between burnout and year of study (r=0.133, p=0.13), a weak positive correlation between respondents’ semester of study and burnout, (r = 0.059, p = 0.498). The respondents’ level of education had a negative correlation with burnout (r = -.259, p = 0.003), the respondents’ age had a negative weak correlation with emotional burnout (r = -0.103, p = 0.238), the respondents’ marital status had a weak positive correlation with burnout (r = 0.031, p = 0.727). The study concluded that due to the burnout syndrome prevalence among the nursing students, they often experienced burnout symptoms including feeling emotionally drained, overwhelmed and fatigued which could significantly be impacting their everyday life, relationships and physical and mental health. The study recommends that Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) management need to take proactive steps and interventions aimed at addressing the levels of burnout syndrome among its students in all its campuses in Kenya. This may include building resilience among the students.
