Abstract

As a service industry and following introduction of new technologies, structuring of operations, and deregulation of labour markets, the banking sector workers are prone to psycho-social disorders. The purpose of this study was to find out factors leading to burnout among employees in global banks operating in Kenya. Banks have been engaging in productive restructuring processes that require employees to meet commercial, profitability, and new customer goals. These demands have made employees get burned out, placing their social and psychological health at risk. The objectives are to establish the effect of psychological capital on burnout syndrome among staff at Citibank N.A. Kenya find out the effect of intrinsic factors on burnout syndrome among staff at Citibank N.A. Kenya assess the effect of extrinsic factors on burnout syndrome among staff at Citibank N.A. Kenya and establish if burnout syndrome among staff at Citibank N.A. Kenya significantly differs between the gender. Descriptive survey research design and census sampling were used. Data was analysed through descriptive statistics where measures of dispersion and central tendency were computed. Also, inferential statistics through regression analysis was adopted. Study findings have shown that psychological capital had a positive, though insignificant effect on burnout. In addition, it has been established that burnout prevalence is same in male and female workers. It is concluded that psychological capital, intrinsic factors, and extrinsic factors lead to a decrease in burnout among Citibank NA Kenya employees. Further on other global banks operating in Kenya and those comparing global banks and local banks are recommended.
