dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of ICT on performance of pharmaceutical manufacturing SMEs in Nairobi County. The study aimed at establishing the influence of ICT on performance of pharmaceutical manufacturing SMEs in Nairobi county, determining the level of implementation of ICT solutions by pharmaceutical manufacturing SMEs in Nairobi County and finally identifying challenges of ICT implementation by pharmaceutical manufacturing SMEs in Nairobi county. The study used descriptive research design and the target population comprised all pharmaceutical manufacturing SMEs operating in Nairobi County. A sample size of 78 senior and middle level management respondents was selected from the target population, and a response rate of 82% was achieved. Questionnaires were used as the primary data collection method. The study found that there existed a positive relationship between adoption and implementation of ICT solutions and performance of pharmaceutical manufacturing SMEs in Nairobi County. It established that most pharmaceutical manufacturing SMEs had adopted and implemented ICT to a large extent which had resulted in improved efficiency and increased productivity. It also established that SMEs still faced various ICT implementation challenges including costly ICT infrastructure due to resource constraints, weak ICT knowledge base, security and trust issues and resistance to change. Recommendations made included intervention from stakeholders such as government in reduction of ICT infrastructure to make it more affordable to SMEs, and investigation of security, ICT training for users and strategies to ensure adequate and availability of ICT expertise. | |
