Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to assess adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and emotional development of adolescents in selected Kenyan public secondary schools in Embakasi Sub-county, Nairobi County, Kenya. The study’s objectives were to investigate ACE patterns among adolescents, examine the level of emotional development among adolescents, assess the impact of ACE on the emotional development of adolescents, and establish the relationship between sociodemographic factors and impact of ACE on the emotional development of adolescents in the selected public secondary schools. The life course perspective, empowerment action model, and Schachter's theory of emotion were used. The sample size was 184 respondents from Embakasi Garrison and Utawala public secondary schools. A researcher’s developed questionnaire, the international ACE questionnaire, and the emotion awareness questionnaire were used to collect data. The quantitative data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26, software. From the study results, most of the respondents (60%) have received quality parental care from biological parents or a close relative. The Pearson Correlation between the respondents who had ACE in their childhood, and the impact it had on their emotional development, was 0.488. While a significant number of respondents had not experienced ACE, there was no significant statistical evidence that pointed to ACE patterns among the majority of respondents. Individuals’ ACE were of paramount importance in determining their future emotional and self-development patterns. The study recommends policy development on practical interventions that would ensure the protection of vulnerable children, non-aggressive approaches to parenting, offering avenues for counseling to children affected by ACE, and religious institutions support followers in upholding parenting practices that protect children from ACE.
