dc.description.abstractABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to assess the association between spousal emotional abuse and the social behaviour of married Christian women from selected mainstream churches in Lari sub-county, Kiambu County. Its objectives were to analyse the sociodemographic characteristics of married Christian women and emotional abuse, determine the prevalence of spousal emotional abuse among married Christian women, assess the social behaviour of married Christian women and establish the association between spousal emotional abuse and social behaviour of married Christian women. The study adopted cross sectional design and targeted 300 Christian married women from the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church and Africa Inland church in Kiambu County. Yamane Taro’s formula was used to compute a sample size of 117 respondents. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select respondents for the study. A structured questionnaire and the emotional Abuse Questionnaire were used in data collection. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in data analysis of data, with the aid of SPSS software version 26. The study found that 72(81%) of the respondents experienced emotional abuse from their spouses, while 16(19%) experienced severe abuse. The social behaviors exhibited by the abused women included anger (80%), irritability (80%), feeling guilty (76%), fear (74%), social isolation (55%), sadness (50%) and suicidal ideations (23%). Multiple regression analysis showed a positive correlation between emotional abuse and social behavior. The study concluded that spousal emotional abuse was prevalent among married Christian women in Lari Sub County. The study recommends that the church needs to put in place programs that offer appropriate marital counselling and create a safety plan, safe shelter, and moral support for victims of spousal emotional abuse.
