dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parenting styles and academic performance of students in high school. The study made use of Dagoretti Boys High School as a case study. The issue of parenting styles is the key element that affects academic performance of students especially at the secondary level where most of the students are adolescents. The objectives of the study were to identify the parenting styles employed by parents, determine the relationship between parenting styles and academic performance, and determine the relationship between social demographics of parents, parenting styles and academic performance. Ex post facto design of a case study was applied. The target population was form two and form three students of Dagoretti Boys High School. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 135 students who were interviewed using a questionnaire and all ethical considerations were ensured. Data was analysed using data analysis computer software, SPSS version 20. The findings revealed that there was a strong relationship between the academic performance of the students and their mothers being permissive. This is because there was a significant relationship with a p-value of 0.000. The findings also established that 70.8% of the respondents’ fathers were authoritarian and 39.6% mothers were authoritarian. The findings further indicated that there is a relationship between academic performance of the students and authoritative motherhood with a p=0.002. The cumulative of 75 out of 121 students scored grade C, D and E and agreed that their mothers were permissive. The study also revealed that there was a strong relationship between the parenting styles employed and the academic performance of the students. The study concluded that parenting styles influence academic performance of students. Therefore the study recommended education and self-awareness of parents on parenting styles. | |
