Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to assess socioeconomic factors on depression among women in khat growing zones: selected collection centers in Siakago-Mbeere North Sub-County, Embu County. The study objectives were to determine the prevalence of depression, establish the relationship between socioeconomic factors and depression and demographic factors and depression, and investigate the coping strategies of women in the khat growing zones. The social support and stress and coping theories informed the study. The research utilized a descriptive design using mixed methods. The sample size comprised 335 women selected using cluster and snowball sampling techniques. Beck's Depression Inventory questionnaires, interview guides, and focus group discussions were used to collect data. Content analysis was employed to analyze qualitative data, while quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that socioeconomic factors showed a negative and significant association (r=-0.719, p=0.000), demographic factors exhibited a positive and significant association (r=0.622, p=0.000), and coping strategies demonstrated a negative and significant association (r=-0.707, p=0.000) with depression prevalence. Regression results established that socioeconomic factors were negatively and significantly related (β=-5.291, p=0.000), demographic factors were positively and significantly related (β=2.663, p=0.003), and coping strategies were negatively and significantly related (β=-4.212, p=0.001) to depression prevalence. The study concludes that socioeconomic factors have a negative and significant relationship with the prevalence of depression. It recommends a comprehensive approach to mental health in the community, focusing on regular mental health screenings, public awareness campaigns, and specialized interventions for those with mild mood disturbances and borderline clinical depression.
