Relationship between Anxiety and Social Behavior among Children of Single-Parents from Selected Children’s Homes in Dagoretti South Sub-County, Nairobi County, Kenya

Abstract

Rates of anxiety and social behavior concerns are increasing among children. Existing research demonstrate link between social behavior and mental health outcomes. This study explored the relationship between anxiety and social behavior among children of single parents at the selected children’s Homes in Dagoretti South Sub-County. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of anxiety, assess the social behavior, analyze the relationship between social demographics characteristics and family status and establish the relationship between anxiety and social behavior of children of single parents. Descriptive research design was employed to obtain 50% of the target population by drawing samples from stratum resulting into a sample of 82 participants from 162 children registered at the three homes. Data collection was done using a questionnaires and psychometric tools (SCARED & CSBQ). Analysis of the data was acquired using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results of the study suggested high prevalence of anxiety as 54% of the respondents had been diagnosed with anxiety, whereas 46% had not. To assess social behavior of children, majority of respondents stated they had broken significant rules, as demonstrated by a mean of 3.54 and a standard deviation of 1.345. To investigate the association between single-parent children's social demographic features and family status, majority of respondents agreed economic issues result in high chances of single-parent families, as evidenced by a mean of 3.42 and standard deviation of 1.567. The study also demonstrated strong positive connections between anxiety and social behavior in the said children with 54% respondents agreeing they experience social behavior concerns. Therefore, establishing programs that teaches children the value of following rules and exhibiting positive social behavior at the same time psycho-educating them on anxiety effects and management would be of great help to such children.
