The main goal of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in cancer patients at the Machakos Cancer and Care Research Centre in Machakos County, Kenya. The specific objective of this study was to examine the relationship between anxiety, depression, and socio-demographic factors in cancer patients. This study studied two theoretical frameworks in order to achieve the specified goals: Cognitive Behavioural Theory (CBT) and Shattered Assumption Theory (SAT). The research design of the study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study used a descriptive research technique to document and examine the lived experiences of cancer patients. The population for this study consisted of 500 people, from whom a sample of 75 was taken. The sample consisted of 75 baseline questionnaires and 15 in-depth interviews. Purposive sampling was used to choose participants, who included both inpatients and outpatients who sought medical treatment at the clinic during the week. To investigate quantitative data using descriptive statistics, the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was employed. The qualitative data, on the other hand, were thematically analyzed. According to the findings of this study, a significant majority of participants, 71.3%, had anxiety and depression symptoms that could be characterized as borderline abnormal or severe. These findings underline the crucial need for this population to receive psychological care and assistance. This study provided useful information about the prevalence of anxiety and depression among cancer patients, as well as recommendations for improving the overall quality of life for cancer patients in Kenya.
