Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explored the psychological effects of massacre on survivors and the coping mechanisms of survivors of the massacre of Mbau village, North-Kivu, DRC. The study was guided by the following objectives: find out psychological effects of the massacres on survivors, determine the coping mechanisms used by the survivors to deal with the massacre’s psychological effects, determine the association between the coping mechanisms and sociodemographic variables, and identify the psychosocial support available to survivors of massacre of Mbau. The Lazarus and Folkman stress and coping theory and Seyle’s stress theory guided the study. A convenient sampling method was employed to select 200 individuals from the survivors in Mbau village, and 198 survivors participated in the study. The research applied a quantitative method for data collection, using a questionnaire in the form of a checklist whereby a descriptive phenomenological design was utilized. The study found that survivors of the Mbau village massacre in the DRC experienced posttraumatic stress disorder. Coping mechanisms varied widely among survivors from prayer and forgiveness to revenge seeking. Sociodemographic factors such as gender, age, education, marital status, and occupation influenced coping strategies. Survivors had access to diverse forms of psychosocial support, including therapy and medication, but community support was limited, underscoring the importance of a varied support network for recovery. The study recommended providing adequate psychosocial support and evidence-based interventions, tailoring support programs to accommodate diverse coping mechanisms, considering sociodemographic factors in customized approaches, and strengthening community support systems to foster resilience and a sense of belonging for supporting survivors of the Mbau village massacre.
