The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of training and development on employee performance using Howard Humphreys (East Africa) Limited, a consulting engineering firm based in Nairobi as a case study. The specific objectives of the study were to identify the training and development practices existing at HHEA, to establish the factors that influence training and development at HHEA, to determine the effects of training and development on employee performance and to evaluate the relationship between training and development and employee performance at HHEA. A qualitative and quantitative research approach to the data collection was adopted using a structured questionnaire to collect primary data. The questionnaire was distributed to all the staff at HHEA who were 80 respondents. The questionnaire was pretested on 10 respondents from the same organization, who were randomly selected from each category of profession. The data was analyzed using a computer statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20 and presented through the use of tables and charts. The results obtained indicated that training and development had an effect on the performance of employees and therefore companies should lay emphasis on training and developing staff. The findings will be useful to human resource managers, human resource policy decision makers and other stake holders to continue investing in training and improving training and development programmes.
