Abstract

This study set out to investigate the role that knowledge management (KM) plays in value creation, growth and sustainability of selected International Non Governmental organizations (INGOs) in Nairobi. Knowledge has been cited as a key asset for organizations that are seeking to excel. Increasingly, organizations have realized that the key resource of the organization is in the intangible assets specifically intellectual capital. Thus, organizations are seeking to improve how they generate, store and disseminate knowledge and how they use this knowledge to develop products and services that meet the needs of their consumers as well as learn and improve their operations. The study findings revealed that KM plays a very distinct role in programme planning and implementation by providing relevant knowledge on community needs, knowledge on the environment and influencing the strategies of the organizations. KM creates value for INGOs in a variety of ways including innovation, best practice adoption, learning, improved communication, improved donor reporting etc. There is found to be a strong link between KM and the organizations ability to achieve sustainability. Institutional sustainability is achieved through the development of staff competencies thereby promoting learning; benefits sustainability arises from continued benefits to communities as a result of proper analysis of their needs; financial sustainability through sustainability of funding streams and, political sustainability through promoting partnerships and collaborations. The INGOs are seen to largely seek growth through partnerships and associations, and KM is seen to influence such growth to a great extent. KM is however viewed as not influencing growth for organizations that seek growth through mergers. In conclusion, KM is considered worthwhile by a majority of INGOs.
