dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to assess the role of corporate governance in organization performance in Kenyatta National Hospital with a focus on the role of Board of Directors, board composition and skills and the effect of the Board on the quality of services offered at the hospital. The objectives of the study included: determination of the role of the Board on performance of Kenyatta National Hospital; determination of the influence of board members skills on performance and determination of the effect of the Board on the quality of services offered at Kenyatta National Hospital. The study used a case study design with Kenyatta National Hospital as the centre of focus. A total of 59 questionnaires were administered with a response rate of 74.7%. Some of the key findings to this study indicated: that the Board of Directors at Kenyatta National Hospital performed different roles. Key among was to conduct strategic planning for realization of the organization’s vision. The study further established that the board of directors influenced the quality of services delivered through the policies and regulations they issued to the employees. The board also promoted the level of accountability among all stakeholders at the organization through policies that governed several organizational operations including procurement and assets management. The following recommendations were put forward; there is need for an independent party to evaluate the performance of board of directors’ performance at the Hospital. There is need to clearly set out roles for each board member, set clear timelines and plan regular performance reviews to determine Board performances.
