Abstract

This research study examined the effectiveness of conflict resolution workshops conducted by the Nairobi Peace Initiative - Africa (NPI-A) in promoting peace within Nairobi communities. With a focus on assessing the impact, role, and perceptions of participants regarding these workshops, the study sought to address a significant gap in understanding the efficacy of such interventions in fostering sustainable peace and community cohesion. Three objectives guided this study: firstly, to assess the impact of NPI-A's conflict resolution workshops on promoting peace; secondly, to examine the role of these workshops in enhancing community cohesion; and thirdly, to evaluate participants' perceptions regarding their effectiveness. The research was underpinned by Conflict Transformation Theory, which emphasized the constructive management and resolution of conflicts through dialogue, collaboration, and empowerment. This study employed a mixed-methods approach and utilized qualitative and quantitative research designs. In addition to a case study research design focused on the Nairobi Peace Initiative-Africa, descriptive research designs are employed to assess impact and evaluate perceptions. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and surveys administered to workshop participants. Data analysis involved thematic analysis and statistical techniques to identify patterns, themes, and correlations. This study aimed to contribute to the literature on peacebuilding interventions by comprehensively examining the efficacy of conflict resolution workshops conducted by NPI-A. The researcher conducted 20 interviews: 5 school administrators, 6 workshop instructors, 5 peacebuilding practitioners, and 4 employees at NPI-A. Furthermore, the researcher administered 300 questionnaires. Of the 300, 220 were valid and used for analysis. Therefore, the response rate was 73.3 percent. The findings concluded by outlining possible directions for further investigation that could expand on the results of this analysis and advance the field of peacebuilding and conflict resolution more broadly. By synthesizing the data and insights gathered, this chapter reflects on the achievements of NPI-A's initiatives. It provides a roadmap for future interventions and research that can further strengthen peacebuilding efforts in Nairobi's urban slums.
