This study aimed to investigate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among adolescents in Great Mercy Children's Home, Kitale town, Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. Its objectives were to assess the level of PTSD and depression among adolescents, identify the causes of PTSD and depression among adolescents, establish the effects of PTSD and depression and determine possible remedies for PTSD and depression among adolescents in children’s homes. Adopting the adverse childhood experiences (ACE) theory and attachment theory, the research sampled 65 respondents using simple random and purposive sampling methods. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews, analyzed with SPSS version 25 using inferential statistics. Results revealed that a significant portion of respondents exhibited moderate levels of PTSD (53%) and depression (48%), with various factors contributing to these conditions. Causes included extreme poverty, parental death, domestic violence, sexual abuse prior to joining the home, physical and emotional abuse, parental separation, and lack of attention from caregivers. The study concluded that PTSD and depression were prevalent among adolescents in children’s homes. Recommendations included recognizing conditions that may reduce high PTSD levels, such as social support in family settings, conducting PTSD and depression screenings, and providing psychosocial support and follow-up for adolescents. These measures aimed to address the mental health needs of adolescents in children's homes, highlighting the importance of proactive interventions and support systems in mitigating the impact of trauma and fostering emotional well-being.
