Abstract

With the discovery of antiretroviral therapies (ARTs), the challenges shifted from HIV/AIDS pandemic to adherence to its treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate factors affecting adherence to ARTs among HIV-positive youths (18-35) yrs. at Mandera County Referral hospital (MCRH). The study specifically sought to find out how socio-demographic, socio-economic, pharmacological, and facility-related factors affect adherence to ART. Included in this study were clients (18-35) yrs, registered at Comprehensive Care Clinic (CCC)-MCRH and consented to participate. Excluded from this study were age 18 to 35 who refused to give consent, those critically ill and mentally incapable. The study employed cross sectional descriptive design and targeted youth age 18 to 35 yrs. registered at CCC-MCRH. Fisher’s et al formulae were used to obtain 214 sample size. Systematic random sampling technique was employed to recruit respondents from 415 in MCRH registry. The quantitative data was collected using self-administered questionnaire and qualitative data through Key Informant Interviews (KII). The collected data was analyzed both descriptively and inferentially using SPSS version 27.0. The quantitative data was analyzed descriptively and presented using bar graph, pie chart, columns and frequency distribution tables with percentages. The inferential analysis was done using Pearson chi-square where P-value< 0.05 signifies association. The qualitative data was analyzed thematically and reported through verbatim
