dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this research was to investigate the role of laptops in learning in public primary schools in Rwanda. The study‟s objectives were to analyze the state of learning in public schools prior to the introduction of laptops, analyze the effects of laptops on learning in public primary schools, examine challenges associated with the use of laptops in public primary schools, and to suggest ways on how to improve the use of laptops in primary schools. The study was conducted in Gasabo District in Kigali Province. The target populations comprised pupils from two selected classes in two selected schools. The sample size for the study was 110 respondents. The research used purposive, stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected using questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions and guided interviews. Quantitative data was analyzed using a computer data analysis software (SPSS version 20) while qualitative data was analyzed through Grounded Data Analysis Technique. The findings indicated that use of laptop technology enabled pupils to be self-reliant, innovative and creative, hence enabling them to learn by doing which created critical thinking, problem solving techniques and creativity. The study also found out that inadequate infrastructure, inadequate training of teachers and lack of good will by some school administrators to embrace technology hindered the use of laptops in primary schools. The study concluded that use of technology has broadened the pupils‟ thinking and bridged the gap of digital divide among the pupils. Therefore, the study recommended that the government should put in place an effective process for initial and sill improvement for teachers | |
