dc.description.abstractWomen exposed to sexual abuse have high rates of lifetime mood and anxiety disorders. Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety are the major mental disorders that affect them. Panzi Hospital has been registering between five to seven victims of sexual violence every day. The purpose of the study was to assess depression and anxiety among adult women who have experienced sexual violence, a case of Panzi Hospital, south Kivu, Bukavu, DRC. Its objectives were to determine the prevalence of depression among adult women survivors of sexual violence, assess the levels of anxiety disorder among adult women survivors of sexual violence, examine the comorbidity of depression and anxiety disorder among adult women survivors of sexual violence and to establish the risk factors associated with depression and anxiety disorder among adult women survivors of sexual violence. The study adopted an explanatory research design and targeted adult women who have experienced sexual violence Panzi Hospital. Fisher formula was used to compute a sample size of 100 respondents. Simple Random sampling technique was used to select respondents for the study. A structured questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory were used in data collection. Descriptive statistics were employed in data analysis, with the aid of SPSS software version 25. Findings revealed a prevalence of both depression and anxiety of different levels, with depression ranging from severe levels (31%) moderate levels, (15%) mild levels (16%). And anxiety ranging from moderate levels (60%) low levels (31%) and severe levels (9%). The study also established a comorbidity of anxiety and depression at a rate of 77% among the respondents. The key risk factors associated with depression and anxiety were marital conflicts (85%), low self-esteem (83%), and family dysfunction (79%), rejection by peers (70%), antisocial behavior (69%), and low socio-economic status (56%). The study concluded that there was a high prevalence of depression and anxiety among sexually abuse women seeking psychological support at Panzi Hospital and that depression and anxiety are positively correlated hence their comorbidity among the respondents. The study recommends that intervention effort against depression and anxiety should be multifaceted in approach in terms of addressing each of the risk factors identified in the study.
