Abstract
Conflicts that lead to separation and divorce have placed the institution of marriage in the contemporary culture in a state of distress. Research in the field of marriage and family especially through the study of couple interaction has attempted to explain this phenomenon. However, these studies have significantly shown that marital conflicts are bound to continue. There are an increasing number of marital conflict cases among married Christians in Kenya; many of which lead to spiritual, emotional, psychological and social challenges. This has resulted in among others, resentments, stress, depression and mental problems in the families. The most serious problem encountered in marital counselling which is also one of the prime causes of marital conflict is the unwillingness of couples to apologize genuinely. This study attempted to find out the role of the Speech Act of Apology in resolving marital conflicts among Christian couples in Ngong Township. The study specifically explored the relevance of the usage of apology speech act among Christian married individuals as a social transaction that involves a significant exchange of power.
The research adopted a descriptive research design, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data by employing stratified, purposive and simple random sampling methods. Data was collected using questionnaires and interviews while Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. Results were presented through summary statistics and tabulations. The study revealed that 53.4% of Christian married individuals use apology speech act. The lack of proper performance of apology speech act negatively affected its effectiveness leading to a significant percentage of Christian (94.2%) married individuals experiencing marital conflict. It is recommended therefore that Christian couples endeavour to find ways of learning how to give a sincere apology whenever there are conflicts.
