dc.description.abstractThe research focused on the assessment of the socio-economic challenges facing single mothers in Kenya: a case of hope for teenage mothers, Mukuru Kwa Njenga in Nairobi County. The study was guided by the objectives to establish the challenges faced by single mothers, assess the factors contributing to the challenges of single motherhood, examine the effects of the challenges of single motherhood and make recommendations on reduction of the number of single mothers in Hope for Teenage Mothers, Mukuru Kwa Njenga. This study utilized descriptive survey design that combined both qualitative and quantitative techniques to enrich data collection and analysis. For quantitative data SPSS software was used for data analysis. The study utilized purposive sampling technique to purposively target a group of people believed to be reliable for the sharing of relevant information for the study. The study selected a sample size of 105(30%) respondents who were derived from the target population of 350 single mothers in Hope for Teenage Mothers (HTM). The results of the study revealed that financial problem was the main stressor for majority of the single mothers. The emotional life of the single mother was also affected by their single status. The study also found out the main cause of single motherhood was early pregnancy. With regard to the ways by which single parenting can be minimized, most of the respondents recognized that there should be laws made to reduce the incidence of single, they should also select correct choice of partners, sex education, and families should get involved in the marital/relationship affairs of their loved ones.
