Abstract
Postpartum depression is a type of depression that occurs to some mothers after childbirth. Studies show that Postpartum Depression (PPD) also affects teenage/adolescent mothers. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors contributing to postpartum depression amongst teenage mothers in Kibra Subcounty, Nairobi, Kenya. To obtain this purpose, the study sought to; establish the prevalence of PPD in teen mothers in Kibra Sub County, determine risk factors associated with postnatal depression in teenage mothers in Kibra Sub County and to assess the support systems available for teenage mothers suffering from PPD in Kibra Sub County. The study was guided by Beck’s Theory of Postpartum Depression and Social Learning Theory. It also adopted descriptive research design. A target population of 3,781 teenage mothers and a sample size of 346 was adopted. Stratified sampling procedure was used and snowballing method to collect data. Data was collected through the use of Social Demographic Questionnaire (SDQ), Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were used to assess PPD and interviews to collect the qualitative data. The quantitative data collected was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Qualitative data was analysed using NVIVO Version 12. The study findings revealed that the PPD prevalence among teen mothers between six weeks and 24 months was at 74.3%. The risk factors namely social economic, self-efficacy and unplanned pregnancy contributed to PPD among teen mothers. Further, the study established that the main form of support was financial (34%) which if not coupled with psychological (12%) and emotional support (11.7%) did not contribute to alleviating PPD among teen mothers. The study thus concluded that sustainable support systems should be designed to mitigate harmful effects of early motherhood.
