Abstract

ABSTRACT The study aimed to understand the media's influence on political leaders and service delivery in Nairobi County during the election season. The research was a descriptive case study with 40 participants and the data was analysed using NVivo 11. The study revealed varied viewpoints on how media influences voter views and attitudes. While media coverage can influence voters' perceptions of political candidates, policies, and campaign events, respondents disagreed on its extent. Some argued that sensationalism and media bias influenced voter impressions, while others emphasized the electorate's ability to choose trustworthy information from various sources. The study also highlighted the interaction between media attention and service delivery priorities, suggesting that media influence can stimulate politicians but also influence service delivery goals. Media organizations should prioritize responsible and ethical journalism, including fact-checking data, providing unbiased reporting, and avoiding sensationalism or biased narratives. To promote media literacy among citizens, initiatives should be launched to assist in developing informed opinions, identifying misleading information, and critically analysing news sources. Transparency should be promoted by elected officials, and civic engagement should be encouraged to bridge the gap between the electorate and elected leaders. Strengthening governance institutions and capacity-building efforts can improve public demand responsiveness and service delivery systems. Increased media diversity and pluralism can prevent media monopolies and expose the public to diverse opinions. Regular conversations between media organizations, political leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens can build synergies and stimulate group efforts to solve challenges related to media influence on political and governance decisions.
